Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (B.B.M.S)
Overview
Bachelors of Biomedical Science program is a 4-year / 8-semester / 128-credit program offered by College of Medicine, GMU.The goal of the program of studies leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences has been developed to enable the graduates to integrate a broad generic base of knowledge and skills in fields affiliated to medical sciences and acquire competencies at an in-depth level in an area of choice. The program will also emphasize and equip the graduate with the skills needed for life-long learning, effective team work and scientific enquiry.
The program comprises of general education and core biomedical science courses with all courses being mandatory. Students are required to submit a research project as part of program requirement. During the last semester, the student is rotated to various laboratories and / or medical diagnostics industry to gain on the job experience under the close supervision of his/her supervisors which serves to provide opportunities to attain appropriate higher level skills before they enter independent practice as laboratory and/or research personnel.
At the end of the program the graduates will be able to enter a career that is service-oriented in the laboratory sciences or medical diagnostics industry or in an academic field in the Basic Sciences. An additional path that will be open to the graduate is embarking on an intensive course of studies in a field such as Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology or Molecular Biology, Public Health etc. leading initially to a Master degree.

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of its existence, GMU celebrated the event with a cake cutting ceremony.
“The completion of fifteen years has provided a useful perspective to look back over the efforts undertaken so far to provide quality medical education to the aspiring students and the results achieved till date. As we step into the 16th year we look forward to new possibilities. Our journey of excellence continues and together we walk ahead”, commented Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President, Board of Governors, Gulf Medical University. He thanked the academic leadership headed by the Provost Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, administrative staff for their proactive contribution in enabling to realize the vision and mission of the institution”.
“The first five years of the university were spent in strengthening the biomedical departments that have contributed to the laying down of a strong foundation of the biomedical sciences in all curricula supported by a vibrant faculty with a strong background in health professions education.
The next five years were devoted in developing a teaching hospital to increase the opportunities for clinical training of students. This has resulted in the overall growth of the GMC hospitals affiliated with the university and helped them together to become one of the largest group of healthcare providers in the private sector in the country.
The past five years have witnessed the growth of research and scholarly activities in the university. With the establishment of a research and referral facility – The Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation [CABRI] it is hoped that it will fuel an exponential growth of the university leading to the establishment of a research-based Institution of Higher Education in the country.
The future lies in developing outcomes based curricula that meet the demand of the health workforce for skilled professionals that is being spearheaded by the timely establishment of the National Qualifications Framework.
On the occasion of the 15th anniversary, I am delighted with the progress made so far and also look forward to reaching greater heights in terms of academia, healthcare and research.

Ever since its inception the Gulf Medical University (formerly Gulf Medical College) and G.M.C. Hospital & Research Centre, Ajman, established in 1998 has been involved in Undergraduate Education in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Premium Healthcare delivery since the last decade. The institution became the Gulf Medical University in 2008 following a Decree by H.E. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, U.A.E.
Gulf Medical University, Ajman (GMU) is synonymous with excellence in the field of medical education, healthcare and research. Today, the institution is a name to reckon with in the region and stands out on par with some of the best medical institutions in the world.
His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi, Chairman Ruler’s Court Ajman was the Chief Guest at the inaugural ceremony. As part of the conference, the Management and Academic Leadership of the Gulf Medical University bestowed a “Special Award and Honor” on Leading Specialists in Diabetes & Endocrinology from all over UAE, in recognition of their exemplary achievements in the field of Medicine and for their service to the community. His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi presented the awards and Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President, Board of Governors; Gulf Medical University presided over the function. Provost Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, University deans and deans of constituent colleges of GMU attended the ceremony.
Dr. Aly Khalil, Consultant Endocrinologist, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, Dr. Walid Kaplan, Paediatric Endocrinologist, Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology, Tawam Hospital, Dr. Hubert K. Penninckx Director Diabetes Centre American Hospital Dubai, Dr. Iyad Ksseiry, Consultant Endocrinologist, Mediclinic City Hospital, Dr. Huda Ezzeddin Mustafa, Consultant in Endocrinology & Diabetes, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City/ Cleveland Clinic, Abu Dhabi, Dr. Elham Al Amiri, Paediatric Endocrinologist, Al Qassimi Hospital, Sharjah and Dr. Mahir Khalil Jallo, Consultant Diabetologist GMC Hospital Ajman received the awards.
Later Mr. Thumbay Moideen and Prof. Gita Ashok Raj honored the invited speakers and sponsoring companies.
Responding to the award Dr. Walid Kaplan said that it was an honor to be selected for this award. “GMU has been extremely thoughtful to bestow this honor on me and my colleagues. This will certainly encourage us” he added.
Speaking on the sidelines of the conference Dr. Aly Khalil said that he was impressed with the infrastructure and facilities at the university. This is my first visit to the campus and I am highly impressed. I wish to thank the President and his team for this honor, he added.
Eminent speakers from all over UAE discussed about various aspects to tackle Diabetes, which is one of the biggest health issues facing the country today, apart from hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Aly Khalil, Dr. Huda Ezzeddin, Dr. Rima Tahhan, Dr. Iyad Ksseiry, Dr. Raad AlKhaiat, Dr Bachar Afandi, Dr Dhafer Al Badri, Dr Walid Kaplan, Dr. Nader Lessan, Dr. P K Menon, and Mr. Praveen Kumar delivered lectures during the conference.
Representatives from Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk and Astra Zeneca were also honored for their support in making the conference a big success.
More than 150 doctors and healthcare professionals attended the Conference which was accredited by the Ministry of Health for 8.5 Hrs. The 3rd Regional Conference will be held in November 2014 according to the Health Communications Division GMU.
Every academic year two whole days are dedicated to celebrate the research works and provide an opportunity to attend the presentations in large numbers, hear the discussions and benefit from the new knowledge that has been generated. “These scientific gatherings also serve as a font of inspiration for further research in collaboration with the different medical and health sciences faculties” said Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost GMU. The research studies formed a medley of observational and experimental studies conducted in hospital, community and laboratory settings, she added.
The organizing committee for ASM this year was the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation (CABRI) at GMU. CABRI is designed to strive as a research and reference facility for health care centers of the UAE. “The objective of GMU- CABRI is to provide a highly interactive forum so as to bring together researchers of different disciplines, from academic and research fields with the aim of collecting, exchanging and promoting the knowledge and new advances in healthcare” said Prof. P K Menon, Director CABRI and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the conference..
The GMU honored Mr. Mohammed Omar, a 4th Year MBBS student, for the best oral presentation and Dr. Shery Jacob, College of Pharmacy for the best poster presentation in the 5th ASM.
The GMU also takes pride in announcing that the Annual Scientific Meeting for 2014 will be expanded in scope as an international gathering of expert medical professionals. Focus areas for the next year will be allergies, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and genetic disorders, informed the organizing committee.
