Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (B.B.M.S)

Overview

Bachelors of Biomedical Science program is a 4-year / 8-semester / 128-credit program offered by College of Medicine, GMU.
The goal of the program of studies leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences has been developed to enable the graduates to integrate a broad generic base of knowledge and skills in fields affiliated to medical sciences and acquire competencies at an in-depth level in an area of choice. The program will also emphasize and equip the graduate with the skills needed for life-long learning, effective team work and scientific enquiry.
The program comprises of general education and core biomedical science courses with all courses being mandatory. Students are required to submit a research project as part of program requirement. During the last semester, the student is rotated to various laboratories and / or medical diagnostics industry to gain on the job experience under the close supervision of his/her supervisors which serves to provide opportunities to attain appropriate higher level skills before they enter independent practice as laboratory and/or research personnel.
At the end of the program the graduates will be able to enter a career that is service-oriented in the laboratory sciences or medical diagnostics industry or in an academic field in the Basic Sciences. An additional path that will be open to the graduate is embarking on an intensive course of studies in a field such as Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology or Molecular Biology, Public Health etc. leading initially to a Master degree.

Hospital &  Research Centre, Ajman, established in 1998 has been involved in Undergraduate Education in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Premium Healthcare  delivery since the last decade. The institution became the Gulf Medical University in 2008 following a Decree by H.E. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, U.A.E.

Today, the institution is a name to reckon with in the region and stands out on par with some of the best medical institutions in the world.
It is the first private medical  institution in the region to accept students of both genders and from all nationalities. It currently has a global composition of the university community made up of an international faculty drawn from 22 countries and a student cohort from 70 countries.
GMU is also the first institution to have launched a private teaching hospital (GMC Hospital) in the country, enabling the students to pursue their clinical training and thus serving people from over 175 nationalities to get high quality healthcare at affordable costs.
The grand ceremony was attended in large numbers which included the faculty, staff and students.

2nd Regional Conference on Diabetes & Endocrinology held at Gulf Medical University

Prevention is better than cure” very aptly describes the current thinking with regards to the entire spectrum of Diabetes. This is true both in terms of avoiding the complications of this disease as well as in bringing down the associated costs, said Dr. M. Hamed Farooqi, Director of Dubai Diabetes centre, addressing the 2ndRegional Conference on Diabetes & Endocrinology for the Northern Emirates held at Gulf Medical University on 15-16 of November 2013. The conference was organized by the Department of Internal Medicine GMC Hospital Ajman and Gulf Medical University.

As part of the conference, the Management and Academic Leadership of the Gulf Medical University bestowed a “Special Award and Honor” on Leading Specialists in Diabetes & Endocrinology from all over UAE, in recognition of their exemplary achievements in the field of Medicine and for their service to the community. His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi presented the awards and Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President, Board of Governors; Gulf Medical University presided over the function. Provost Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, University deans and deans of constituent colleges of GMU attended the ceremony.

5TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING HELD AT GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

Gulf Medical University hosted the 5th Annual Scientific Meeting on 17th and 18th November 2013. The meeting marked a saga of the scholarly initiatives and achievements of the Gulf Medical University community that is reflected in its theme: “15 years of GMU – an emerging story of Education, Healthcare, Quality, Research and Innovation”
5TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING HELD AT GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITYEvery academic year two whole days are dedicated to celebrate the research works and provide an opportunity to attend the presentations in large numbers, hear the discussions and benefit from the new knowledge that has been generated.   “These scientific gatherings also serve as a font of inspiration for further research in collaboration with the different medical and health sciences faculties” said Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost GMU. The research studies formed a medley of observational and experimental studies conducted in hospital, community and laboratory settings, she added.5TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING HELD AT GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY
This year 422 participants had gathered for the meeting including 92 faculty and hospital members and 330 students. GMU Ajman confirmed its leadership in medical education and health care services with 30 oral presentations and 31 poster presentations selected in accordance with the standards of peer review medical journals. Many of those presentations were part of research studies held in UAE or abroad.
5TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING HELD AT GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITYThe organizing committee for ASM this year was the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation (CABRI) at GMU. CABRI is designed to strive as a research and reference facility for health care centers of the UAE. “The objective of GMU- CABRI is to provide a highly interactive forum so as to bring together researchers of different disciplines, from academic and research fields with the aim of collecting, exchanging and promoting the knowledge and new advances in healthcare” said Prof. P K Menon, Director CABRI and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the conference..
